A SIGN OF ECONOMIC TIMES? THE WAY BACK FAILS TO DRAW IN THE CINEMA CROWDS

"THE WAY BACK", has not done as well as expected during it's first opening week.  I suspect some of lack of bums on seats could be as a result of the current 'economic recession'.  Cinema tickets are costly these days, and with people watching the 'purse strings' going to the cinema may have just lost it's appeal, for a while.  Another reason could be the films 'serious' content; it's an epic and heavy film... probably very worth while and rewarding, but alas I think many will wait until it comes out on DVD.

"The Way Back" opened nationwide at 659 theaters (following a brief, Oscar-qualifying run in Los Angeles in late 2010) with a mere $1.46m (no. 14 on the chart) according to studio estimates found at Box Office Mojo.

The Newmarket release's average was a dismal $2,161 per theater — especially poor for a movie screening at relatively few locations. (All things being equal, the fewer the number of venues, the higher the per-theater average should be.) It's quite possible that The Way BackFearless back in 1993 — $6.99m then, or about $13.42m today.

It's quite possible that The Way Back will become Weir's (inflation-adjusted) lowest grosser among his American-made films, earning even less than Fearless back in 1993 — $6.99m then, or about $13.42m today.

COLIN TALKS TO MTV ABOUT "FRIGHT NIGHT"

EXTRACT:

... Colin Farrell who plays that character in the remake recently spoke with MTV about the Fright Night remake, while promoting his film The Way Back.

He told them; "I mean, I loved the original, and I hope the film is -- on it's own -- entertaining and works. Because I really did love the original, so much so that -- as I've said -- I was hoping I wouldn't like the remake when I read it, because I didn't want to have to answer questions about remakes and lack of originality and all that s---," he laughed. "I didn't want to think of myself in those terms either, so I was hoping that I didn't like it. But read it and I'm an actor and I loved it and I went, 'OK, let's go to work.'"

Farrell also revealed that Peter Vincent is a lot younger, but I think we gathered that from the poster, and that the remake is set in a very contemporary setting.

Fright Night remake arrives in theatres on August 19, 2011.

I have to admit... I have reservations.  Two 'remakes' coming out this year could prove a little risky so I'm keeping everything crossed!

CONFIRMED: COLIN FARRELL TAKES LEAD ROLE IN "TOTAL RECALL"

The 34-year-old was rumoured to be taking over the lead role in the movie last year and the producer Neal Moritz has now confirmed the news.

Farrell was recently keeping quiet about the rumours that he is involved in the film.

He said: "I'd like to. I just don't know. I'm not sure. I haven't been home for Christmas. I haven't made the required calls. I don't know. I think, maybe."

However Moritz confirmed to Collider.com that Farrell will be starring in the film.

He said: "We're doing the movie with Colin Farrell."

The film will start shooting in Toronto on May 15 this year.

COLIN WISHES ROBERT "ALL THE LUCK IN THE WORLD"... ?!

This is an interesting article whereby Colin goes some way to explain why he couldn't do David Cronenberg's adaptation of the film "Cosmopolis", for which Robert Pattinson is now taking lead role.  Personally, I still can't quite believe Colin has chosen to go with "Total Recall" over this film, but I guess time will tell... if not in box office terms then certainly in terms of the pay-check!  As for credibility as an actor - well that's anybody's guess?

EXTRACT

While fans are happy about Pattinson's new project, the role initially went out to Colin Farrell. MTV News caught up with Farrell recently while he promoted his upcoming drama "The Way Back," a film set during World War II about a group of prisoners who escape the Siberian Gulag and must walk over 4,000 miles to freedom.

Farrell said he didn't end up doing "Cosmopolis" due to timing and scheduling issues "for everyone involved."

"Myself and David [Cronenberg], we had good conversations between he and I," Farrell said. "I would love to work with him at some stage, I really would. I really wanted to do that [film]."

And what does he think of Pattinson replacing him?
"It's a wonderful script. I wish him all the luck in the world with it," he said.
